You enter the number of points to remove from each side — 1 inch is 72 pt — and the tool sets each page's CropBox so anything outside that rectangle is hidden. Apply the crop to all pages or restrict it to a range like 3-12, 20. Because the underlying content stream is untouched, text remains fully selectable and the file size stays small.
